Weak bladder suspension muscles often cause SUI, or the muscles that control urine flow. The Urologoist performs this procedure with a cystoscope, and injects bulking agents (gel-like collagen material) into the urethra. This closes a hole that allows urine leakage and thickens the urethra wall to improve urine retention.

Urethral bulking procedures are typically performed in an outpatient setting and under local anesthesia. This allows the patient to stand up after the injection to see if continence has been achieved. If not, the Urologist may perform additional injection right away.
