As a service to our referring physicians, Lowcountry Urology Clinics would like to present some basic information on cystocele repair that you may wish to share with your patients.
Definition of Cystocele
A cystocele occurs when the fibrous wall that separates a woman’s vagina from her bladder suffers a tear, often during childbirth. This tear allows the bladder to bulge into the vagina. Common symptoms of a cystocele include urinary frequency, urgency, retention, and incontinence.
Sometimes the symptoms of a cystocele are not evident in younger women, because their natural estrogen levels keep the vaginal walls strong despite the tear. Later, during menopause, estrogen decreases and the vaginal walls weaken, exposing the tear.
Cystocele Treatment and Repair
While more minor cystoceles can sometimes be managed with vaginal muscle strengthening exercises or by avoiding strenuous activities such as lifting, more severe cystoceles will require surgical repair. Your Urologist will surgically move the patient’s bladder back into a more normal position and repair the tear.
