As a service to our referring physicians, Lowcountry Urology Clinics would like to present some basic information on transurethral resection of bladder tumors that you may wish to share with your patients.

Definition of Transurethral Resection of Bladder Tumors

The method of treating a cancerous bladder tumor will depend on the stage of the cancer, or, how deeply the tumor has invaded the bladder wall. Transurethral resection, or TUR, employs a cautery device attached to cystoscope. It scrapes or shaves off tumors and collects the tissue for evaluation.

If it is a superficial tumor that has not invaded the bladder walls, TUR may be sufficient treatment for the tumor. If the tumor is invasive, further treatment such as chemotherapy and immunotherapy will be required.

Effectiveness of Transurethral Resection of Bladder Tumors

Transurethral Resection is the most common and effective treatment for early-stage bladder cancer, and a valuable tool for examining later-stage cancers.
