As a service to our referring physicians, Lowcountry Urology Clinics would like to present some basic information on enterocele and rectocele repair that you may wish to share with your patients.
Definition of Enterocele
An enterocele is a vaginal hernia, when small intestines and peritoneum protrude into the patient’s vaginal canal. The small bowel descends into the lower pelvic cavity, pushing at the top of the vagina, creating a bulge. This condition occurs mostly to women following a hysterectomy procedure.
Childbirth and aging can also weaken the pelvic floor that supporting the bladder, uterus, colon and small intestine. This can lead to an enterocele.
Enterocele Treatment and Repair
While minor enteroceles can sometimes be managed with pelvic floor muscle strengthening exercises, more severe enteroceles will require surgical repair. This surgery is often performed laparoscopically.
Definition of Rectocele
A rectocele, or posterior prolapse, occurs when the thin wall of fibrous tissue separating the rectum from the vagina weakens. This typically results in the front wall of the rectum bulging into the vagina. This condition may cause discomfort and can complicate bowel movements, but is not typically painful.
Rectocele Treatment and Repair
If the rectocele is particularly bothersome, or if it protrudes outside of the vagina, as it does in some cases, your Urologist may opt for surgery. Excess stretched tissue may be removed and, at times, a reinforcing mesh may be added to support the wall between the rectum and vagina.
