What is sexual dysfunction?
Sexual dysfunction refers to a difficulty you may experience during any stage of a normal sexual activity, including desire, arousal or orgasm. Men and women can both experience sexual dysfunction.
Are there different types of sexual dysfunction?
Yes. Types of sexual dysfunction include sexual desire disorders, sexual arousal disorders, erectile dysfunction, premature ejaculation, orgasm disorders, sexual pain disorders and others.
What causes sexual dysfunction?
Causes of sexual dysfunction vary by type.
Sexual desire disorders (lack of emotional response) can be caused by decreased testosterone, decreased estrogen, aging, fatigue, pregnancy, depression, anxiety and medications such as antidepressants.
Sexual arousal disorders (lack of physical response) can be caused by decreased penile blood flow or lack of vaginal lubrication. Certain chronic diseases may also contribute, as relationship issues between partners.
Causes of erectile dysfunction are discussed on our erectile dysfunction page.
The cause of premature ejaculation has historically thought to be psychological, but recent research suggests there me be a neurological element as well.
Orgasm disorders, such as a very delayed or even absent orgasm, can have psychological or physical causes. Drugs like anti-depressants can also be the culprit.
Sexual pain disorders among women are often caused by involuntary vaginal muscle contractions. They can also be caused by insufficient lubrication due to insufficient stimulation or from hormonal changes.
How do you treat sexual dysfunction?
Treatments for male sexual dysfunction include lifestyle changes such as tobacco or alcohol use, and exercise habits. Your Urologist may prescribe medication like PDE5 inhibitors (e.g. Viagra.) There are surgical options such as penile implants, as well as injection therapies, external mechanical devices and others.
Your Urologist may treat female sexual dysfunction with pain relievers, desensitizing agents, lubricants and hormone therapy. There are also devices that increase vaginal and clitoral blood flow.
Since there is often an emotional/psychological element to male and female sexual dysfunction, your Urologist may recommend individual or couples counseling.
