Radical Nephrectomy Defined

Radical nephrectomy is the surgical removal of an entire kidney, and often the surrounding fat, adrenal gland and lymph nodes. Typically performed as a treatment for cancer of the kidney.

Open Radical Nephrectomy

During open radical nephrectomy, the affected kidney is removed through a large incision in the patient’s flank or abdomen. This procedure may require the surgeon to remove a rib in the process. In the simplest terms, this is the traditional “open you up” type of surgery. This procedure is often for patients with larger cancers, or whose cancers have spread to nearby organs. Patients with prior surgeries may also be candidates, as prior scarring may make laparoscopic procedures difficult.

Laparoscopic Radical Nephrectomy

The goals of laparoscopic radical nephrectomy are precisely the same as open radical nephrectomy. However, instead of one large incision, a laparoscopic procedure requires only three or four incisions of 0.5 to 1 cm each. The body cavity is inflated with gas to create working space, and a tiny camera and surgical instruments enter through the incisions. This procedure generally induces minimal trauma in the patient and results in minimal blood loss.

Robotic Radical Nephrectomy

Robotic radical nephrectomy is very similar to the laparoscopic method, with an important difference. During laparoscopic surgery, the Urologist utilizes a two-dimensional video monitor. However, robotic kidney surgery allows a three-dimensional view of the operative field. This provides a much wider range of motion of the surgical instruments and makes it easier to perform the complex surgical maneuvers this procedure requires.
