Definition of InterStim® Bladder Neuromodulation
This treatment is often used in cases of overactive bladder. Your Urologist will place a small electrical wire through your skin into the lower portion of your pelvic bone, or sacrum. The wire delivers a small electrical charge to the nerve that comes from your bladder. The electrical stimulation of this nerve often relieves the overactive bladder.
Who may Benefit from InterStim® Bladder Neuromodulation?
Potential patients include those with urinary urge incontinence, fecal incontinence, idiopathic constipation (undetermined cause), urinary retention and interstitial cystitis.
Details of the InterStim® Procedure
Typically the procedure consists of two parts. The first step is often nerve evaluation. The Urologist will place a small needle into the pelvic bone, and connect it to a wire that passes through the skin. The wire connects to an electrical device. The patient wears the device for a few days, and then returns to the Urologist to discuss the results. If the device has caused the bladder to be less overactive the Urologist will place a more permanent device.
The patient then begins a protocol of weekly treatments, typically for 12 weeks and lasting 30 minutes each.
Success Rates of the InterStim® Procedure
Low-level electrical stimulation to the nerve that comes from the bladder to the spinal cords has been shown to decrease the overactive nature of the bladder significantly. Approximately 70% of InterStim® patients see a significant improvement in their symptoms.
